The right air fryer for one or two people
Easy to read, light basket, few buttons: here are air fryers, tools and tips that go with the recipes in “Air Fryer Cookbook for Seniors to Lose Weight”.
Our picks at a glance
The easiest air fryers have two dials: one for time, one for temperature. Comparison based on manufacturer information, not our own tests.
Comparison: small and medium air fryers
Dial models are listed first. For one or two people, 2 to 5 quarts is enough; bigger models take more counter space.

What to look for
Size: 3 to 5 quarts
Enough for two portions of vegetables and fish. A smaller basket heats up faster and fits in the dishwasher.
Controls: dials are easiest
Two dials for time and temperature are simpler than a flat touch panel: you can see and feel what is set. Big brands now mostly sell digital models; dial models come mainly from smaller brands.
Basket: light, with a sturdy handle
The basket gets hot and is pulled out while cooking. A wide handle and low weight make that safer.
Viewing window
With a window you can check your food without opening the basket. That saves heat and time.
Tools that really help
Tips for lighter air fryer cooking
Preheat for 3 minutes
A short preheat makes vegetables and fish crisp on the outside and keeps them juicy inside.
Do not overfill
Hot air needs room. Fill the basket no more than halfway and cook in two rounds if needed.
Shake or turn halfway
Shake fries and vegetables, turn fish and chicken. That way everything browns evenly.
A spray of oil is enough
One or two sprays of olive oil give a crisp result. That keeps calories low without losing flavour.
Check the inside temperature
A meat thermometer shows when chicken (165 °F) and fish (145 °F) are done, so nothing is undercooked or dry.
Clean while it is warm
Rinse the basket after it has cooled a little. Liners save scrubbing.
Cooking chart
